∆ DELTUM visual identity

Edition 0.1Discuss on Discord

This document sets out a minimal set of visual bearings for consistent presentation of the community. It remains open to change and does not impose a mandatory style on participants' personal creative work.

Name and symbol

  • ∆: a standalone sign used in avatars, pictograms and small formats.
  • ∆ DELTUM: the main form of the public name.
  • DELTUM: an acceptable text form when using the sign is inconvenient.

The sign does not need to be repeated on both sides of the name. A single delta before the word looks calmer and makes the symbol recognisable.

The main emblem is a white hollow equilateral triangle on a black square ground. Geometric clarity, equal thickness of the sides and precise centring all matter.

Principles for rendering it:

  • 1:1 avatar format;
  • straight edges on the ground, no rounded corners;
  • black ground and white symbol;
  • no shadows, glow, gradients, textures or decorative details;
  • enough free space around the triangle;
  • legible at small sizes.

Because the sign is geometrically very simple, it may appear in other contexts. DELTUM becomes recognisable through the consistent combination of the symbol, the name, the content and the culture of the community.

Colour and typography

The base pair is #000000 and #FFFFFF. Shades of grey are acceptable for functional details. A calm, highly legible geometric or neutral grotesque typeface without decorative effects is preferred.

Space and composition matter more than ornament. In long texts readability comes first, so contrasting headings, a clear structure and moderate spacing are enough.

Application

The avatar uses only ∆. In headers and covers the name ∆ DELTUM and one short phrase are acceptable. In texts the sign can be used as a publication marker if that helps navigation.

The visual system should not portray the community as a closed order, a technology corporation or an organisation with a rigid hierarchy. Its task is recognisability and clarity.

Meaning of the symbol

The triangle can be associated with change, direction and openness to revision. These are possible interpretations, not the only obligatory symbolism. The sign does not replace the substantive principles of ∆.
